The Palmer Squares
The Palmer Squares
The Palmer Squares don't fit neatly into any of the pigeonholes perpetuated by folks only passingly familiar with Chicago hip-hop, and that's much to the group's credit. Their wacky wordplay, tongue-twisting verses, and limber instrumentals make them sound more like Native Tongues-style 90s boom-bap than much of what succeeds today. The fifth track on Planet of the Shapes, "K.O.S.," hints at their vision for hip-hop—its title is an acronym for "knowledge over swag." Of course, if you believe them, Acumental and Terminal Knowledge don't listen to much new music anyway—in interviews they seem to they prefer to talk more about George Carlin than about contemporary rappers.
Midwest Hype
Led by the optimistically named Ideal, Midwest Hype combines hip-hop, funk, and big-band horns to create brassy soul for all kinds of asses. Declaring they majored in “freshness, love and color at Fresh University,” this upbeat septet upholds a warm, laid-back attitude towards their expansive, reggae-infused sound. Operating mostly as a live band that welcomes fans from any genre, Midwest Hype plans to release a summer mixtape to accompany their 2009 LP, Fresh Colorful Love.
The Dread
The Dread is an Alternative Hip Hop/Rock band from Chicago, IL, formed and fronted by Billa Camp, formerly of Treologic. In the summer of 2013, The Dread traveled to Los Angles to open up for Kool Keith. Receiving a roaring ovation from the crowd, the group considered the trip a success and began to record their first EP.

The group released their first EP, Something Like A Band on February 10, 2014; it featured the noteworthy song “Grateful Dread”, which was a finalist in the John Lennon Songwriting Competition. They released their second EP, "Meet Me At The Sun" on September 11, 2014.

The Dread was formed in 2012, originally under the name The Grateful Dread. The original line-up included Billa Camp & Shelly Johnson, guest starring Nolan Silas, former guitarist of ManDroid & Jahmal Cole, Community Activist. In mid 2014, Nolan officially joined the band, along with William Silas, former front-man of Mandroid, Dj Alo of Garden Music & Mikey Lightning of Lowdown Brass Band. As artist, the group’s creativity isn’t limited. In addition to making music & music videos, they’re consistently producing video shorts, which can be found on the band’s social media pages.

Prior to forming The Dread, Billa Camp wrote, produced, and toured with his former band, Treologic. Billa’s vocals and production are featured in the video game Watch Dogs and on ABC’s television show Black Box (Episode 2 - Sweet Little Lies). As a solo artist, Billa’s also been featured on Fuse TV, opened for N.E.R.D, Wiz Khalifa, Pac Div and Del the Funky Homosapien. In the spring of 2011, Billa Camp was a finalist in the Coors Light Coldest Emcee Contest.

In closing, The Dread Continues to collaborate and perform, recently opening up for Tech N9ne and receiving a write-up in Free Music Archive while preparing to deliver their 3rd release.
